Note: MDE is performing security updates March 17th. While disruption is not expected, please consider submitting files prior to the due date.

Student Support Data Collection (SSDC)

Now is a great time to review and enter information needed for Student Support Data Collection reporting for this year. Staying on top of this data entry helps lessen the burden at the end of the school year. Data entry instructions for Synergy can be found out in Help under State Reporting > Region 1 Reporting Guides > Student Support Data Collection.

More information can be found on MDE’s SSDC page: https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/datasub/StudentSupport/

Minnesota Common Course Catalogue (MCCC)

You may be working diligently on your MCCC data, or you may be trying to wish it away. Wherever on the MCCC spectrum you may be, we want you to be aware of some adjustments being made to MCCC EDVP reports. MDE is working on these reports to try to improve their usefulness to you as an end user. During this work, you may notice a large increase in validation errors, specifically those referring to a Section, but not including a Section ID. Prioritize other errors you may have while this work is in process. We hope to see quite a few of these additional errors fall off once work on the reports is completed. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Schools with VPK and EC Reported Under the Same School Number

MDE is reviewing logic on error 268 that you may have seen/are seeing on your EOY MARSS 08 Error/Warning report. You may be seeing this error for students enrolled 100% in VPK, and who have an additional EC enrollment for services. To clear the error for now, you can change the VPK enrollment to 999 percent enrolled. Please note that additional guidance or changes to the error may come in the future for these enrollments.

Ed-Fi Myths Debunked

Myth: All of the information being sent by Ed-Fi is a secret and you cannot see it.

FALSE: You can see your Ed-Fi data from Synergy! There are a few ways, actually. Depending on the data you are looking for, there are multiple Minnesota specific Ed-Fi screens. The most common screen being MN Ed-Fi Student, where you can see the information Synergy sent for the student. If something is missing, or not quite right, you can single student sync the student from the menu. Any syncing of Ed-Fi data, like a single student sync, produces a JSON log. The JSON log tells you exactly what Ed-Fi is sending for each data piece in the sync. These logs can seem overwhelming, but I promise they will be your best friend (more on that in the future!)

The other place in Synergy to see your Ed-Fi data is on the EdFi Portal screen. The State ODS Viewer tab allows you to pull from MDE the data they have for a specific entity in Ed-Fi. This means you can find specific data at MDE for a student, and better yet, you can even delete it. This means you can clean up those pesky orphan records haunting your comparison report. If you want directions on how to do this, email synergy@region1.k12.mn.us. Or you can just ask to have us delete them for you, whichever you are more comfortable with!
